I last wrote about Diana Nyad at the end of August 2012. She was trying to fulfill the dream that had possessed her since the late 70s to swim from Cuba to Florida. Not a small self challenge and one that had gone unfulfilled until today when she arrived in Florida after swimming 110.4 statute miles in 52 hours 54 minutes 18.6 seconds. Yea Diana! Plus, she did this just after her 64th birthday. During this attempt she wore a protective face mask to help against jellyfish which might be why she finally was able to complete the feat.
This was her 5th attempt and she said it all when she gave her statement:
“I have three messages. One is we should never, ever give up. Two is you never are too old to chase your dreams. Three is it looks like a solitary sport, but it takes a team.”
She never gave up and in the end she succeeded. I also like the quote on her website: “She freaking made it” Yes, she did and she inspires everyone who hears the tale.
